Don't wanna go out!

Do you ever the feeling that you don't even want to step out of the front door? Well that's me today.

Unfortunately I've got hairdressing clients this afternoon (whose stupid idea was that? oh, it was mine). I did the wife of the couple at the end of last week and husband couldn't be there, so could I possibly do him this afternoon? Normally I would say no, but I was going out that way later this afternoon to see a garden to quote on, so as a favour I would do it. The garden people had said that they were going to be out all day shopping and could I go as late in the day as possible. I said 5pm was the latest as we were going out - I'll tell you about that in a minute. So, 5pm to see the garden, work it back to do this blokes hair, I would get to him at 3.45. Then, wifey asks if I could cut a bit more off of the back of her hair. Yes, no problem. No I don't want to wash it all it won't take long I'll just spray it. No I won't be blowdrying it or I'll charge you for the whole cut and blowdry. Fine all set and done.

This morning the garden person rang and said that they weren't going out after all and I could go along when I wanted - Argghhh! So I'll see the garden at 2pm and then do the hair client.

We are off out this evening to some friends we haven't seen for a while. When they first had their house here and it was just a holiday home, they were fun. We would see them every 2 months or so for an evening. As they were both still working they had a few tales to tell. Then they moved out here permanently and have retired and they have become less fun to be with. She drinks like a fish, tells stories we have been hearing for the last 3 years and barely goes outside the house at all. He sits quietly and makes really daft comments. The food is not my cup of tea to be honest as most of it is tinned, including the vegetables. At least this evening there will be other people there that we know.

I don't mean to sound churlish, but I really don't enjoy their company that much and would rather stay at home, especially as Doctor Who is on!!!

I do hope the day turns out better than you think it might.

It's a tough call though, you don't want to be rude but...

Debra, I sooo appreciate what you are saying about your neighbours. I think it's so easy out here to get people like this latching onto you. They are worse than bloody velcro. We try to keep ourselves to ourselves as much as poss. I refuse to get into the "dinner party" circle and don't see why I should be bezzy mates with someone with whom I have nothing in commomn just because we speak the same language. Bah Humbug !

The worst part is feeling 'obligated' to go for some reason. Why do we do that? Why can't we just say no?

I know I have come up suddenly too ill to go out. Fortunately I can call on my bad back or my celiac or a number of reasons to give. But in the end I feel horrible because I lied to get out of it instead of telling the truth.

Bah humbug!!

Think of it as a social service, helping them? As you say, dilution will help.

Oh Debra you poor thing, why is it we sit there at a dinner party and we think to ourselves, what the hell am I doing here. I think at my age now I can say No, but I never do. Tinned veggies????

Hi Debra, it's me again. I just read your blog to Clare and she laughed and said if they are that dull they probably don't have an internet connection. Just as well!! OMG, what if you read just how boring you were :-)

Ah yes, it takes more than just a language in common to forge a friendship.

Hi DND, yesterday actually went very well. I have taken on the garden I went to see. All I need now if some dry weather to start working on it. The hair went well as we had such a good laugh. FUnny how days you think are going to be a bit crap turn out fine!

Hi Debs, It is difficult isn't it. We have found exaclty the same with some people here. We decided that we weren't going to do 'return invites' to people we didn't particularly like. They get the message eventually.

Hi Aims, yes, I often have a bad back or feel really ill!! FUnny how I know I am going to be ill a week in advance!

Hi Frankofile, well we did our duty and went, at least we had a laugh and I got to practice my French with their lovely neighbours.

Hi Hazel, I wish I could say no, but I can't. ALthough I did use the excuse that my kitten was too young to leave, a few months ago!!! Trouble is they do have the internet, but I don;t think they know about this blog, at least I hope not. OH read my blog this morning and thought I was 'sailing a bit close to the wind'. I considered deleting the post but then thought, it's my blog, I should be able to write what I like on here!! I would hate them to read it though! I don't deliberately want to upset anyone.

Life's too short to have to have dinner parties with people who you don't even like! Can't you go to the local pub with them now & then as there would be plenty of other distractions? I am forever worrying that my blog will be recognized but if it was I would plead insanity! Or maybe deny it & say there were two of us. Not sure which, yet. The net is a huge place!!!!!

I told a big fat lie, a few months ago, because I could no longer stand the company of my next door neighbours. They wouldn't leave me alone. They would insist that I found time to see them, giving me 5 minutes notice, then they would ask me 20 questions about my life and that of my family, but didn't want to share anything with me. I told them that I was too busy to see them any more, as I had taken on extra work. I feel so much better, now. I didn't realise how much they were dragging me down.

Whoops, welcome to France, Deborah.

Hi Maggie, Unfortunately there are very few bars round here. There is no real pub culture in France. There is a cafe in their village, but it is 1mins walk from their house, and the people who own it are real rip-off merchants. I worry that my blog will be read by someone I have moaned about, mind you, I have usually moaned about OH and he reads it!!

Hi Mean Mom, way to go!! When we first moved here we were introduced to an old enlgish woman living in a big house with her grandson. Her own daughter and granddaughter were still living in the UK for various reason. This big house is in the middle of nowhere, and she doesn't drive. Of course we offered to help her with various things. The daughter never said a word of thanks for us looking after her mum, taking the cats to the vets, taking her to the airport, doctors etc. When our business started picking up we didn't have the time to go round as often, and I was getting fed up of feeling guilty if I popped to the shops without asking her. The old lady has got a short memory as we have heard that she has been slagging us off lately!! Leaves a bitter taste.

Hi Farming - thank you! Ahh, the joys of being an immigrant where all the others seem to want to set up a little English enclave!

Debs, not another David bloody Tennant fan? Your post was moving along quite nicely until you came to the permanently startled fawn who is now (hopefully) relegated to kids stuff. Ye Gods!

Hi Billy, 'Fraid so - I love David Tennant, he is 'sex on legs' as far as I am concerned! I have been a Dr WHo fan since childhood and although I though Chris Eccelstone was amazing, David T has bought a certain 'je ne sais quoi' to the role.

I no longer socialise with people I cannot stand! I dumped some very spiteful toxic women 'friends' and my god how liberating that was. Dump them! You wont lie on your death bed wishing you'd spent more hours with them!

As for those chooks - apply for shared custody now!

I nearly did a "don't want to stay in!" post, but they know my blog. I've told my hubbie, no more am I cooking for people I don't like and who so obviously don't like me. Something to do with my Northern accent, sense of humour (I have one) and lack of university education me thinks. Bon Courage Debs x

Hi MOB, you know I feel the same. Life is to short to spend it with people that you don;t like or care about! We are going to Les Herolles market tomorrow to get some more chooks!

Hi Debs, Go girl!! You are so right. We spend our time cooking for these people and don;t even want them to be there!
